Definition |
A common neuro-degenerative disease of the extrapyramidal system of unknown aetiology. leading of disorder of movement and mostly occurring between 45-65 years. |

Prognosis |
Is the only neuro-degenerative disorder that is treatable long term. Despite some improvement in the quality of life, remains a physically disabling malady that reduces life expectancy, and tends to progress. Dementia is an indicator of poorer prognosis. |

General Measures |
Investigate for drug (‘taking some mild tranquillisers”) as possible cause and withdraw the same if found.Physiotherapy to be given especially if rigidity id predominant. Teach the relevant exercises to the patient and relativesOccupational and speech therapy may be useful. Special adjustments at home like elevated toilet seats, tall chairs. Special eating utensils.non-slip table mats,and devices to amplify the voice may be provided. |

Life long for medication, assessment of progress, and physiothereapy. |

Inadequate Response |
Failure to take drugs.Inappropriate dosage.Simultaneous administration of other drugs like phenothoazines. |

Prevention |
Avoidance of drugs that can cause tardive dyskinesias mentioned under ‘Diagnostic critetria’ . |
